It is a very well known fact that diamonds are the hardest substance found on the earth till date. It is also known that they are formed by the nature in varied designs and forms. One can find a variety of expensive precious and semi-precious stones on the earth and the diamonds are one of the costly gems found on the earth. These stones are used in making jewelry and adding value to the other accessories of another use.

Each piece of diamond found from the beneath of the earth has different features and values. The gemologists analyze the value of the gem and grant a certificate. The value of a diamond piece is determined on the basis of its color, clarity, cut and carat.

Color of the diamond plays a major role in defining its cost. The colorless diamond is the best quality of the diamond. However, one can find diamonds in a range of red, blue, pink, purple, orange, brown, yellow, green, white and black color. The colored diamonds are technically defined as defected pieces; but still they are pleasing to the eyes. The diamonds get the coloring from the impurities in the mineral. These are found in the cells which makes the upper layer of the crystal.

The colored diamonds may be the defected pieces but if combined with the other colored diamonds, a stunning piece of diamond jewelry could be made. The value of the diamond jewelry is identified on the scale of color of the gem. The color scale to measure the value of diamond starts from letter ‘D’. The best known quality of diamond known till date is stated under the letter ‘D’ as the experts want to leave a space for the other superior quality of diamond. The alphabet ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ are left for the best quality of diamonds. The scale moves forward alphabetically.

It is hard to find the diamond with least color. The scales move ahead with letter ‘E’ and ‘F’. There is a minute difference between the two points. A lay man can not find the difference in the piece. However, an expert can judge the difference. But the difference between the grade ‘G’ and ‘H’ could be identified by anyone comparing with the other high grade diamonds. They are near to the colorlessness. Similarly the diamonds stated under ‘I’ and ‘J’ also called as near colorless ness; but has more colored comparing to the diamonds under ‘G’ and ‘H’. The scale goes till ‘Z’.

The level of color increases with the increase in the letter on the scale; which means the ‘Z’ lettered diamond piece is ranked lowest on the scale of colorlessness. The quality also decreases with the increment of the letters on the scale. This scale is used only to measure the colorlessness of the diamond; and applied only to the white diamonds. Colored diamonds are not measured on this scale. The experts measure the quality of colored diamonds by their own self.
