So, you are interested in a lighter that is waterproof? Well, you will find many things, but a lighter that can be lit underwater is not one of them. There are ways to get a light underwater, but there really isnt much that can be lit underwater, so no one has devised a lighter that will function properly underwater yet. I will discuss with you maybe with a bit of humor the whys and hows of those waterproof torch lighters that everyone seems to want, but cant quite find.
First, there are underwater torches. These are used to repair vessels of all sizes without having to actually dock the vessel. It would seem an obvious step that there should be waterproof torch lighters. However, the science is not quite there yet. Yes, a torch lighter is like a miniature torch, but even a torch requires a special attachment to work underwater. Unless they start making special attachments for lighters that will allow them to work underwater, a waterproof torch lighters doesnt truly exist.
There are those popular torch lighters made popular as a novelty item by Zippo, but they do not claim to work underwater, they are quite wind resistant though. I actually own one for camping trips. I went outside and retrieved the most expensive lighter I have ever bought, and I tried lighting it underwater. I can say quite honestly that it did not work. What I did notice though is it did still work when out of water. This is actually impressive for a lighter. However, would you expect anything less from Zippo?
I have found that waterproof torch lighters do not truly exist. However, a torch lighter is extremely resilient, and will definitely be able to take a good soaking. If you need a lighter that offers protection against the elements, then a torch lighter may well be the lighter for you. You will find that they do not get old and wear out naturally as do many normal lighters, and they are stylish.
As I was pondering this question, I was curious, what could you possibly want to burn underwater anyway? Things underwater are, well, sort of wet. You will find that even things taken directly out of the water do not like to burn. If you want a lighter than is excellent against any condition other than underwater then you will probably enjoy a good. sturdy torch lighter.
