Web Site Hosting - Do it cheaply?

By: Jim Sarls

We all know that in most things in life you get what you pay for. Since this is almost a universal truism we may have the tendency to overpay for some things just to make sure that we get what we need. The truth in Web hosting cost is that sometimes cheap is more than good enough.

Let's first however, make sure we are both talking about the same thing when we say Web hosting. If you are planning to put up your first website this would be one of the first base six that you need to deal with. It is very nice and exciting to have a beautiful website design on our computer at home but most of us, having gone that far, would hope to publish it so that the entire world could see our work of art. That is what Web hosting provides. The opportunity for others to see your website.

There are several opportunities that you have before you when you are considering your first website. It would be unproductive and confusing to try to understand all of the opportunities that are available for web hosting. Let's just say that for most people putting up their first website, low cost hosting will work just fine.

On the other hand if you have a serious written business plan along with deep pockets and a wonderful unique idea then it would make sense for you to purchase the services of highly specialized equipment. For the rest of us, real-life means smaller budgets and so we are less interested in bells and whistles and more so in, hey, let's just get the job done cheaply. By the way, this attitude probably does not extend to taking advantage of free website hosting opportunities.

If we do just a minimal amount of considering what we are looking for here, we realize that we need someone who has a specialized computer running server software that has a connection to the Internet which allows your website to be seen by people around the world. You expect to find someone who, for a small amount paid monthly, will let you place your files on their server so that the entire world can see your website.

As someone just starting out with one of your first websites, or perhaps your first website, you are looking for inexpensive web hosting and it most likely will do an excellent job for you. The one exception to the previous statement is that you probably do not want to get so cheap that you take free Web hosting if you want to be taken seriously on the Internet. Most of the companies offering free websites are not people doing so out of the goodness of their hearts so they expect to be paid somehow. Their payment is probably in the form of advertisements being run on all of your pages. If you are planning to run a serious business oriented website then at least pay a few dollars each month for your hosting so that you can control what advertising, if any, runs on your website.

Other then the previously described free hosting most inexpensive hosting plans will serve you well. In the beginning, all you are looking for is something that covers the basics. Your advantage here is that over the last couple of years the competition in the web hosting business has become so fierce that even the cheapest web hosting accounts have extensive resources for you. It would not be surprising if you would wind up staying with one hosting company for years if that decision is based solely on the hosting companies' capabilities.

finally, depending or one what you hope to accomplish with a website it may be worth your while to consider one of the community plans whereby you not only receive posting space as part of your monthly dues but you also have a community of experienced marketers helping you to learn this business and generate a regular Internet income. While cheap web hosting can be obtained for five or $10 per month the extra $15 or $20 per month that you pay to be part of a community is likely to pay for itself many times over.
