If your time was unlimited you could probably spend six months exploring all the sites and sounds that Italy has to offer and still not see everything. But chances are you probably only have a couple of weeks so you’ll have to make good use of your time and visit some of the best architecture Italy has to offer. It’s truly the heart and sole of Italy. Well that and the food of course!
You may not have heard about it before but it’s one of the places you’ve just got to visit. That’s the Brion Vega Cemetery. This is one of Carlo Scarpa’s masterpieces and is still considered one of the best pieces of modern architecture Italy has to offer. The sculptured concrete is absolutely breathtaking. Whether you are an architecture buff or not, you’ll recognize the importance of the architectural designs here!
The Coliseum is the one place most of us are familiar with. It is known world wide as an architectural marvel. The coliseum was built starting back in 72 A.D. and it was originally used for barbaric combat that entertained the common folk. It is absolutely amazing and you’ll never see anything like it again!
The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a 20th century art museum that holds the collection of American heiress Peggy Guggenheim. It includes the works of Picasso, Morandi, Braque, Boccioni , and Pollack as well as many other well known artists. It houses one of the greatest collections of modern art in the world, and it’s quite a contrast to the ancient architecture and art of Italy.
Vatican City sees millions of visitors each year. Vatican City is the heart and sole of Catholicism. Not only spiritually but politically as well. It is the home of the Pope and it is the center of all decisions relating to the Catholic religion, some more controversial than others.
You could spend your entire vacation wondering the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel which houses some of the Roman art masterpieces.
The Piazza San Marco also referred to as St. Marks Square was called the drawing room of the world" by Musset. It is the only true square in Venice and it is still studied by architects today because it is one of the most beautiful public squares in the world. St. Peter’s Basilica, the Campanile, as well as shops and cafes surround the Piazza. Take time to climb the Campanile to enjoy the breathtaking view of Venice.
The Renaissance architecture of Cathedral of Santa Maria Dei Fiori or Il Duomo is thought to be the greatest in the world. The Cathedral or Duomo of Florence as seen today is the result of years of work that covered more than six centuries. This octagon dome was designed by Brunelleschi and at the time it was built it was the world’s largest dome. It took an amazing six centuries to complete and it has become Florence’s symbol. If your health is up to it be sure to take the time to climb the bell towers 414 steps. Florence will be before your eyes in a breathtaking panoramic view.
You could spend a lifetime exploring Italy and probably still not see everything it has to offer in the way of art and architecture. We’ve touched on only a few of the greatest architecture marvels that are a must see. Be sure to explore some of the other wonders Italy has to offer and architecture that has been around for centuries and still continues to flourish and draw a crowd today.
