If you’re reading this article you are either currently involved in a network marketing company or you’re thinking about joining one and want to get a head start on the game. In either case this article is for you. In 3 clear steps I will show you how to identify, apply, and sustain the energy that every top earner in network marketing has already learned to harness. It’s called Inspiration and it is your untapped source of success.
1) Identifying Inspiration vs. Motivation
Have you ever seen a kid on a sugar high? The endless physical activity, uncontrollable laughing, and off the chart “energy” levels are exhausting to witness. This is followed by an ugly crash landing and a nasty bout of grouchy non compliance, sluggishness, and irritability. Parents deal with this all too frequently. And so do network marketers.
That’s right! No doubt at some point you’ve either experienced a “motivational high” or witnessed one in your down line. The newbie joins the team ready to rip it up, tear it down, and do it all over again for as many days as it takes! Or the veteran team member returns from an event ready to recommit and dominate the compensation plan in record time! But, just like sugar-stuffed children, the newbie and the veteran eventually come down off that motivational high…way, way down. And so goes the emotional roller coaster until finally they get out (before they lose any more money) and are eternally convinced that network marketing is a crock!
The remedy? Inspiration, not motivation. The Greeks defined inspiration as “breathing within”. Breath implies life. All living things grow and become part of a system that is larger than themselves. As successful network marketers, we must first identify what it is that gives us breath, or life. What gives YOU purpose and a place within a system that is larger than itself? This will be your lasting inspiration, your emotional vitality.
Many network marketers refer to this as your “Why”, as in, “Why did you join network marketing in the first place?” Ask any number of network marketers what their “Why” is and they’ll rattle off a list of predictable answers: More money, new car, bigger house, vacation abroad, no traffic, or multiple streams of income. Yawn. Those are great answers, but they are short term, limited and finite.
What will you do with more money, a new car, a bigger house, or a vacation? Why are those things important? What will they provide for you and your loved ones? How would those things improve your quality of life? Your “WHY” must be larger and deeper than any tangible item. Your inspiration will come from a source that is bigger, better, and wiser than you. Personally, the tangible rewards that result from successful network marketing are merely a means to a much greater end that I pursue with my family. Take time to really consider what it is that you most want to achieve in life and let that be your breath, your life, your inspiration for success in network marketing.
2) Applying Your Inspiration
Now that we’ve differentiated between motivation and inspiration, consider the following levels of certainty, their source, and how they manifest in your business:
Level 1: Need to
Source: Survival
Manifestation: “I need to succeed so I can pay off debt!”
Level 2: Have to
Source: Security
Manifestation: “I have to succeed in order to continue being who I am.”
Level 3: Want to
Source: Social Input
Manifestation: “I sure want a new boat like my neighbor’s.”
Level 4: Choose to
Source: Self Development
Manifestation: “I choose to challenge myself to succeed.”
Level 5: Love to
Source: Self Fulfillment
Manifestation: “I love help my team grow and succeed.”
Level 6: Called to
Source: Inspiration
Manifestation: “I am called to change and improve my situation and my circumstances for a reason that is bigger and better than myself. “
Now ask yourself this question: Where am I going and who is coming with me? If you are at the highest level of certainty and are inspired to succeed in your business, then you will first concern yourself with where you plan to have your business take you. Your high levels of certainty, confidence, and inspiration will then attract the people you need along the way to make it possible for you to reach your destination. However, if first you concern yourself with gathering prospects and hoping they will join you on your journey, you’ll neither get to your destination nor have anyone join you in your process.
When determining the steps you must take to reach your journey’s destination (goals) keep the “THREE Ds” in mind:
• Desire
• Deserve
• Detach
First, rate your level of desire on a scale of 1 to 10. If your level is any less than a ten you need to reconsider your source of inspiration. Having a level of 4 or 5 indicates that you leave the back door open for failure to come in and snatch your dream. It reveals that you don’t truly plan on success.
Second, rate your level of how much you deserve total success on a scale of 1 to 10. If you believe you deserve any less than a success level of 10, you block yourself from receiving it. You become your own thief as you steal your earned success. You must be open to receiving abundance if you wish to attract it into your life.
Third, you must detach yourself from the physical outcome of the goal. Learning to let go and detach from outcome based goals is incredibly liberating and will conserve massive amounts of emotional energy. For example, rather than setting a goal of signing up 5 new reps by the end of the month or reaching a certain pay level, your goal might be to connect with 3 prospects per day, make 2 business presentations per day, or invite 3 people to your weekly conference call. Separating yourself from outcome based goals will allow you to release expectations and embrace the process of achieving success.
3) Sustaining your Inspiration
Inspired success is not immune to failure, or learning. Failure is perfectly acceptable as long as it does not become your identity. Minor setbacks in your learning curve do not make up who you are. Rather, look at your “failures” as opportunities for new growth. Having a purpose that is larger than yourself (inspiration) and connecting with it daily allows you to learn from your mistakes, apply the lessons, and go forward as you trust the process.
So how do you connect with your inspiration on a daily basis? It’s simple: Before you approach any one about your business whether it be on the phone, in person, via email or other advertisement, ask yourself, “What is my intention? What is my purpose?” Keeping this frame of mind will set the stage for inspired success guided by your bigger “Why”. In turn, your voice and energy will convey your inspiration, which acts as a magnet to attract new business partners and associates.
Conclusion
Inspired success is a simple 3-step process of first identifying your bigger “why”, letting it guide you through your goal setting process, and connecting with it daily. Sustained, emotional vitality rather than short lived motivational highs and lows will facilitate your inspired success in network marketing.
