By: ove nordkvist

Setting your goals are the first step to achieving them. Setting goals are the main key to improving performance, but how often do people set goals, and never measure them or quit halfway?

To set goals is a very important exercise for achieving personal and business success. Personal goals are weaved into family goals. from there it will lead to your business goals, which will provide input into the strategic planning process. Once you have created and established your goals, they will provide the direction for your life and your business.

Here's an example of the correlation between business goals and personal and family goals: The business goal of having the biggest and most productive farm business in the county, is based on the personal goal of the desire to be the biggest farmer in the county. In other words, a business strategy is developed to achieve your business goals, the business goals are used to achieve personal and family goals.

Setting goals are absolutely essential to stay disciplined. However, goals in themselves do not have the power to produce discipline, you must commit yourself to achieve them. We hear and read a lot about the steps we should take to achieve our goals. However, unless we don't take the first steps to realistically consider who and what we are right now, we will never be able to set realistic goals.

By specifying goals for yourself, you will give yourself a particular direction, a particular level of performance to reach. To face a challenge, will boost confidence and increase performance. Your definition of success should be that you have exceeded your own performance goals, not the performance of other people. When you've achieved a goal you'll get rewarded with the sense of self worth and increased motivation, which will make all your efforts worthwhile.

Examples of personal goals: Achieving a more comfortable standard of living, enjoying a less hectic life, being your own boss, the opportunity to make decisions, enjoying the freedom to take chances, being able to spend time outdoors breathing the fresh air.

Get into the habit of systematic setting goals and working toward achieving the goals is a highly effective way to maintain self confidence and increase competence in general. Although many people want, hope, desire to achieve their goals, there are only a minority that are committed enough to actually achieving them.

Setting goals are very important because without a clear and attainable goal you don't know where to go. Setting goals are not only for motivation, it will also give you a sense of direction on what you want to achieve.
