An Effective Team Has Team Chemistry

We’ve all seen it when a certain group of individuals produces outstanding and amazing results. They are congratulated for their team effort. But it’s much more than that. An effective team must have team chemistry!

We’ve all heard about or known about sexual chemistry or romantic chemistry in our personal lives. We’ve also all experienced that “guy or gal” that rubs us the wrong way. Grates on our nerves! And that’s why the chemistry of a team in the corporate world can make or break the project, the department, or sometimes even the company.

Lets look at two teams who are on the same path striving to meet a team goal. The goal is clear, concise, organized, realistic, and measurable. So why is it that Team A is successful and even over achieves in a shorter time frame then expected, while Team B completes the goal but they are over budget and over the deadline. The answer is team chemistry!

With team chemistry comes team cohesion and the ability to work together as a unit as well as complete individual components on their own. A team that has the right chemistry will have complimentary behaviors, experience, and skills. The diversity in a team leads to better solutions.

A team that likes each other, interacts well with each other, and trusts each other will be cooperative, communicative, and honest. They will be willing to share their skills, ideas, and knowledge and will work together with other team members to accomplish their goals.

A team that has personality clashes will be ineffective. Every member of the team might be brilliant but because they rub each other the wrong way they will accomplish little if anything at a group level. Each player alone might be dynamite but as a team they will fail you. There will be no synergy, no trust, and no loyalty within the team even if these individuals are highly dedicated to the company.

When there is chemistry these brilliant minds will excel, explode with ideas, creativity, and innovation. Their progressive thinking will empower the group to excel at their goals.

Of course putting the perfect team together can be quite difficult. After all you may have limited resources and there always seems to be one giant ego in every group. But it can be done!

Start by watching how your employees interact. It won’t take long to conclude who gets along well together, who is the one who eggs trouble on, and who should positively not work together. Once you’ve watched the office chemistry for a few days you can begin to build your team.

Yes you may have to include a couple of members that aren’t going to be great for chemistry but if the majority of your team have chemistry the others will be forced to work with the group or look like the bad eggs which they won’t want!

You should also have an outside source available to your team members who they can speak to in a confident manner to help resolve issues within the group and who will help facilitate resolutions. It doesn’t hurt for you to also have an open door policy where any member of the team can feel free to discuss issues that have risen within the group.

By observing, planning, and providing resources you can work towards building an effective team with chemistry. Once you achieve this you’ll have the most powerful and dedicated team around!
