Firing And How it Impacts Your Company

By Walter H Groth

Being one of the most impacting tasks a leader has to perform it is astounding that this crucial skill is not even taught at our universities.

Usually, when someone must be fired, this becomes a pretty uncomfortable situation for the leader involved. Of course, there are the legal procedures to follow involving HR. However, besides those, as a leader you must communicate the decision in a proper way to the person being fired.

Lacking proper training and especially the knowledge how human beings are operating, the situation can quickly go out of your hands. If this happens, more severe problems are the consequence.

Here are some tips what to observe when having to fire someone:

- Always keep in mind that the person you must fire is a human being with feelings and emotions.

- Take enough time to clearly communicate the decision and the reasons which led to that out of your perspective.

- Listen carefully to what the other person has to say. You will learn a lot about what is going on below the surface.

- Ask if you can help in any way to make this situation easier for the person and then again listen carefully.

- Stay detached while talking to the person. Whatever emotional comments might be made, keep in mind that the feelings expressed are normal and thank the person for being so open.

- One last thing: We always meet at least twice in life. What looks right now as unfortunate could turn into an opportunity or a threat for you down the road.

Firings are always very challenging situations for any leader. Only if you as a leader are able to master yourself, you will have the foundation to handle this in a professional way and even turn it into a mutually beneficial situation.
